On the face of it, Louisville, Kentucky seems about the unlikeliest place for a hotel like the 21c. Not just an inspired modern boutique hotel, but a 9,000-square-foot contemporary art gallery as well, it’s the sort of place that would turn heads even in New York or Los Angeles — in Louisville, where the Midwest gives way to the South, it’s positively shocking. But this is a post-industrial city that’s reinvented itself, and while some cities hitch their renewal wagons to sports teams or suburban office parks, Louisville is going the arts-and-culture route.
The 21c belongs to locals Steve Wilson and his wife Laura Lee Brown, whose foundation owns the art collection that fills the hotel’s gallery. The couple brought in the New York-based architect Deborah Berke, whose portfolio, fittingly, includes both Yale’s new art school and the Scottsdale Mondrian hotel. And while the boutique hotels in many smaller provincial cities are tepid affairs, offering half-hearted gestures in the direction of modern design and taking care not to alienate the traditionalists, the 21c, by contrast, has left all caution behind.
Rooms are as urbane as they come, packed with artworks, custom-designed furnishings and high-tech amenities like in-room iPods and 42-inch LCD televisions. Proof On Main, the hotel’s restaurant, brings a taste of sophistication to the downtown dining scene, and the museum, of course, is one of the neighborhood’s star attractions. Louisville may have a way to go before it’s the new Manhattan, but it’s clear that the 21c is the start of something, drawing art-savvy travelers who, until recently, would have been hard pressed to imagine a reason to visit Kentucky — but who, once there, may find its traditional charms (who could say no to a wee dram of bourbon, watching the races at Churchill Downs) impossible to resist.

Perfect hotel

Living in new york city and traveling a lot, I've seen a lot of cool hotels, but the 21c is easily one of my favorites. It's like staying in a good modern art museum. And the rooms are nice. Couldn't ask for anything more.I Disliked

21C ... one month later
Stayed August 2008
Overall rating: Good
I Liked
We were back in Louisville for a weekend, and so it was an excellent opportunity to see whether or not the service had changed at 21C. It certainly had, but it might have had something to do with the fact that our Tablet Plus privileges bumped us up to their best suite. This time, we had a solicitous call from the front desk to inquire how we liked the room and if anything could be fetched for us; previously, we were left to our own devices. Additional toiletries were left in the bathroom, and Proof/room service attended to us even after hours.I Disliked
Like our previous stay, the advertised concierge call didn't happen. On our previous stay, we received a $42 voucher to breakfast; this time, the whole meal was comped, despite our spending more.1584 user(s) found this review helpful

21C in the summer
Stayed July 2008
Overall rating: Good
I Liked
21C recently became a Tablet Plus hotel, and despite arriving during a busy weekend, we were told that we had been upgraded to a better room, which put us on the top floor looking out towards the river. The linens by Matteo are heavenly, as are the robes, and the Malin & Goetz toiletries are generously sized. Tablet Plus members also receive vouchers for breakfast at Proof, and although the food was excellent, the prices are a little inflated for Louisville. The art is amazing--it's just a shame that the hotel's trademark red penguins are €3,000 apiece!I Disliked
Although they advertise that you will be telephoned by their concierge to arrange the details of your stay, we never received such a call. The hotel's WiFi forces you to go through a proxy server that blocks SSL e-mail ports. The hotel is new to its Tablet Plus status, and so we had to call down to find out about the spa voucher.2086 user(s) found this review helpful
