41 Hotel
41 Buckingham Palace Road, Westminster
London, England, UK
Neighborhood: Westminster
Style: Traditional Elegance
Atmosphere: Secluded
29 Rooms
Behind an unmarked door in Westminster, just across from the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace, the 41 Hotel is one of London’s best kept secrets. At just 18 rooms, it’s as intimate as they come, offering five-star grand-hotel service on a bed-and-breakfast scale.
Interiors are as rich as any, and depart from the country-house cliché—here the palette is an urbane monochrome, with white walls, mahogany panelling, black leather armchairs and black-and-white tiled floors. Guest rooms carry on in the same decorative scheme; white-painted walls, black lacquered work desks, and eye-popping checked carpets. White feather duvets float above black bed skirts, and while the big mattress companies may boast of their mass-produced “hotel-quality” lines, 41 uses only the finest: hand-made Savoir mattresses, each the product of some sixty hours of craftsmanship.
All this would be expected to come at a price, and to be frank, it does. But it’s a value proposition as well: after 8:30 you’re invited to “plunder the pantry,” furtively helping yourself to cold meats, salads and canapés in the executive lounge.
