Even the most jaded of travelers can’t help but be struck by the contrast between the ancient city of Istanbul and the ever so modern A’jia. Here, on the Asian side of town, on the quiet eastern shore of the Bosphorus, a 19th-century governor’s mansion has been given a makeover — behind its classic Ottoman facade it’s now the very picture of contemporary city life, all glossy wood floors and sleek modern furnishings.

In fact looking just at these interiors, you’d be hard pressed to identify the setting at all; fortunately all rooms but one (oh unfortunate one) look out over the Bosphorus strait, many from private balconies. No contemporary comfort is spared, from LCD televisions with a near-infinity of channels to the deep freestanding tubs with views from the upper floors of the split-level suites.

A’jia makes the most of its location: the hotel perches rather dramatically over the waters of the strait, and dining out on the terrace at the water’s edge is something to remember. If you’re longing for the noise and clamor of the city center, then this isn’t the place for you — you’re a half hour from the old city center, and fifteen minutes from the commercial district — but for those guests who choose A’jia this seclusion is no small part of its charm.

Good Hotel but Service Needs Improvement

by Xavier from New York

Overall rating: Good

Stayed July 2008

I Liked

Excellent atmosphere and views. Rooms are very comfortable and tastefully decorated.

I Disliked

Staff needs to improve English speaking ability: had trouble with the shuttle boat times, ordering breakfast, and getting good restaurant recommendations. This needs to be better at this price point.

Stylish, beautiful, far-off

by Lena from Oslo

Overall rating: Excellent

We were upgraded to a suite (#5) which was huge with a small balcony and partial view of the Bosporus strait. First floor had a nicely decorated sitting area incl TV and DVD player, a desk area, a large bathroom with a waterfall shower, fully equipped mini bar and a large wardrobe. Steel stairs led us up to the second floor bedroom with a bath tub next to our bed. The second floor also had a TV and a wardrobe. The overall interior both in our suite and the rest of the hotel was beautiful and stylish. When the weather was nice we had breakfast outside at their gorgeous large terrace by the Bosporus, otherwise inside at the chic restaurant (and bar). Included in the room price you could chose from 5 different breakfast menus – very tasty American Breakfast! The city centre is on the European side of Bosporus (and quite far down from the hotel), but the hotel offered a boat shuttle (local fishermen as suppose) from the hotel to the European side which worked smoothly. After the hustle and bustle in the city centre it was really nice to get back to the hotel for a relaxing drink on the terrace. The restaurant also has a delicious dinner menu or you can chose to take a quick taxi to one of the better restaurants nearby (for instance Lacivert which is excellent and only 3 minutes from the hotel by taxi). The hotel is perfect for weddings/ other celebrations and is also featured in fashion ads because of its great surroundings and fabulous architecture.

I Disliked

Our air-condition did not work, maybe because it was off season, but the weather was warm and sunny and the second floor got quite warm during the afternoon/ night. Also the light switch system was like an IQ-test (without the logic) but a technician helped us within minutes when we complained to the reception. The hotel is VERY far from the city centre, especially if you get stuck in the traffic jam during rush hours. On one occasion we spent 1.5 hours in a taxi on our way back to the hotel, luckily the taxis are inexpensive. It usually takes about 30 minutes if you are not stuck in a traffic jam, but if you have table reservations in the city you should leave the hotel no later than one hour earlier. Even so, it is difficult to state this as something you dislike about the hotel because it is so nice to be away from the city. I will definitely recommend A’jia to everyone who is planning a trip to beautiful Istanbul.

6 hours in this hotel - LOVED IT.

by John from Weston

Overall rating: Excellent

Stayed March 2008

I Liked

This place is killer. Of a half dozen hotels I have stayed at in Istanbul this place has them all hands down. It's a long but very interesting trip from the airport, but the arrival through an unknown (to me) part of town was amazing. Great staff, great bar, great food, and while I was only there for maybe 3 hours of sleep, I will return there to explore / enjoy this hotel more often. Get a room on the lower level on the water - amazing view. Great bathrooms and beds.

I Disliked

There was nothing about this hotel that I did not enjoy.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
