AC Palacio del Carmen
C/. Oblatas, s/n
Santiago de Compostela, Spain
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Quiet
75 Rooms
Santiago de Compostela is a picturesque Medieval city in the northwestern region of Gallicia—quite literally as far as you can get from such Spanish travel hotspots as Barcelona, the Balearics, and Bilbao. It’s a formidable tourist destination in its own right, but one with an old-fashioned bent, centered more on sightseeing and culture than on nightlife and debauchery—though when the pilgrims mass on St. James’s day, a certain upright and highly moral brand of chaos ensues.
We’ll assume you intend to visit during calmer times—there’s nothing like a former convent, converted into a smart modern design hotel, to invite a little quiet contemplation. The interiors are modern, and not in an attention-grabbing way—the original architecture is largely intact but rather than miles of antiques and authentic bedspreads actually used by Sister So-and-so, the designers have opted for a restrained and spare look, crisp lines set off against rich materials and colors. The feeling is one of a natural evolution; this is not a waxwork historic hotel, but it’s true enough to its medieval setting that one imagines these are the sorts of accommodations the Sisters would prefer today.
Facilities are 21st-century, with an indoor pool and fitness center, and the ever-important high-speed internet access. The restaurant brings traditional Galician cuisine up to international standard—love it or hate it, it’s at least a distinct school from the Mediterranean Spanish status quo. An ideal escape from the familiar mass tourism destinations, and an inspiring home base for a little Medieval exploration.
