The Duke of Santo Mauro’s 1895 French-style neolassical mansion is now one of Madrid’s most elegant and luxurious hotels. At just 51 rooms, and located in a largely residential district off the Paseo de Castellana, it’s intimate—a feeling magnified by the discreet nature of the service. Any number of foreign dignitaries and stars of the stage and screen prefer the Santo Mauro, but as for names, the staff aren’t talking, and except for the Beckhams (hardly the world’s most discreet couple anyway), neither are the guests.
Unlike some of Madrid’s grand old hotels, though, the Santo Mauro has been updated a bit; designers visiting from Barcelona have brought a splash of the contemporary, including some sleek modern furniture, as well as massive, decidedly ahistorical super-king beds. Many rooms have Persian rugs atop parquet floors, and many have restored Italian marble fireplaces. The mansion’s exquisite former library has been converted into a restaurant, serving an excellent and refreshingly un-trendy international cuisine, and what were once the ballrooms are now used for conferences.
Though not exactly right in the middle of downtown, the Chamberi neighborhood is convenient enough, and as quiet as any in Madrid—this is where all the Spanish nobility established their residences at the turn of the 20th century. The Santo Mauro takes advantage of the luxury of space, offering an indoor pool and fitness center, as well as a parking garage. There are palace hotels that are nearer the city center, and more opulent than this; but it’s hard to imagine anywhere more discreet and private.
The overall atmosphere was like visiting with friends in a big old house. Relaxed, familiar, inviting. The real attraction are the public spaces. The restaurant service, food and setting are excellent. The outside terrace is just what's needed, sitting outside with a coffee on a slow, sunny morning. The room was well equipped, and a good wifi connection throughout the building was appreciated.
I Disliked
Having only 12 hours in the hotel, the thing I disliked most was not having enough time to enjoy the public spaces more.
There were some facility problems. The equipment in the gym was inadequate, (no bench, not enough free weights). One piece of equipment didn't function. Hotels this size would do better to tie up with a nearby gym/spa.
Also the CD player in my room didn't work. Perhaps a better equipment check routine is needed.

The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.
This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.
How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?
We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.
This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.
The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.
Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!
