ART Hotel Atelier sul Mare
Via Cesare Battisti, 4
Castel di Tusa, Sicily, Italy
Style: Cutting-Edge
Atmosphere: Quiet
100 Rooms
It’s easy to imagine that the scenic outlying areas of rural Italy belong to some long-past era — in fact most Italian hotels go out of their way to create exactly this impression. So it’s natural that a sense of surprise is evoked by a place like the Atelier sul Mare, which, despite its location in a picturesque Sicilian fishing village, is that most 21st-century of lodgings: the “art hotel.”
The name doesn’t neatly translate into English (unless you’re comfortable with “atelier” as an English word) but loosely it translates to something like “artist’s studio by the sea,” which is in some sense exactly what it is. Fifteen resident artists in turn have spent time in this once-conventional seaside hotel and upon departing each has left one of the rooms transformed into something rather unconventional, something like an installation piece, with little more than a bed as a reminder of the familiar shape of the traditional hotel room.
Some are more accessible than others, and some do sacrifice a bit of comfort in the name of art, but all are novel enough to entertain — and, winningly, all come with arresting sea views. The risk-averse may wish to play it safe, sleeping in one of the hotel’s 25 standard art-free rooms — there’s still plenty to look at, with continual exhibitions in the hotel’s restaurant area, and the charms of the Sicilian coastline at your doorstep.
How to get there:
From Palermo take the A20 east to Castelbuono, and then the SS 113 east to Castel di Tusa. From Catania take the A19 west and north to Buonfornello and then the SS13 east to Castel di Tusa.
