One can only hope the original monks lived this well. Imagine what you wish a French wine-country escape could be, and if you’re a traditionalist, prone to visions of stone walls, arches and spiral staircases, then you might just be picturing the Abbaye de la Bussiere, in the Burgundy countryside near Dijon. It’s something from a fairy tale, surrounded by acres of parkland and vineyards, its newly renovated interiors looking, for the most part, not a day under two hundred years old.
The twelve rooms and four suites differ somewhat in style and greatly in layout — this place was never conceived as a hotel, of course — but all are lavishly decorated in antique woodwork and rich fabrics, and nearly all of them have whirlpool baths in their impressive renovated bathrooms. It’s kept its classic good looks, but updated them with a full complement of modern five-star comforts.
By now you’re getting the idea that in spite of its monastic heritage, the modern-day Abbaye isn’t exactly about self-denial. This is obviously among the wine capitals of the world, with any number of big-name wineries nearby, available for a taste. And the food is something special as well, upscale modern French and served in a soaring cloister space.
How to get there:
By Air: Currently, the nearest airports are Paris CDG, Lyon and Geneva. However Dijon-Longvic is planning to reopen its airport to various destinations including London: useful for weekend breaks at the Abbey. Telephone the Abbey for helicopter charter and landing details.
By Rail: Dijon is on the main TGV line from Paris, Gare de Lyon, and there is one direct train daily from Charles de Gaulle airport to Dijon, avoiding central Paris. The Abbey can arrange transfers from Dijon station or organise a hire car service, many of which are based at the train station.

What I liked:
The whole place is simply stunning! The bedroom and bathroom were out of this world, and the Abbey is beautiful. The grounds are immaculate and the owner, Clive, is a genuinely nice guy. The receptionist went out of her way to be helpful.
What the hotel could do better:
We were expecting overwhelming service, and the receptionist gave us that. However, we were not overwhelmed by the service or food in the bistro restaurant. We stayed on a Monday night, so the gastronomic restaurant wasn't open. We ate in the bistro, which appears to be the old kitchen. It was very bright, and the waiters were courteous but not warmly welcoming. The menu was very limited, with only fish, rabbit or beef tartare as the main options. I would have expected at least one "safe" menu option, such as steak, lamb, pork or chicken. The other courses were acceptable, but in no way remarkable. The wine, which was recommended as a good local wine, was 130 euros, nd ended up being undrinkable and thrown away, although we didn't pay for it. Instead, in case wouldn't like another bottle, we were just given a glass each from a bottle which was already open. There was no further option apparently!
Next morning we were 15 minutes late for breakfast. We were told we had to have the lunchtime menu, even though we just wanted some croissants and jam. The lunch menu was almost identical to the evening menu, apart from a change of fish! We declined asking if they would cook us something a lighter. The chef came out with a cross look on his face and spoke to the waiter who came over and told us we could only sit at the table and chairs if we were having dinner. They couldnt do anything simpler. We were asked to move to a patio instead. The waiter also told us off by pointing out that the menu was subtly different to.the evening menu. Eventually we had left over croissants and jam. All in all we felt like a nuisance. It has put us off going back, which is a shame as the place is beautiful. What happened to the customer is right?

What I liked:
Everything from the pickup in Dijon to the meandering wine tour at my departure was perfect. The hotel staff and owners were wonderfully accomodating. The meal at the hotel restaurant was fabulous. The abbey and its grounds looked better than even what was captured in pictures. All of the little details in both decor and service were executed to a tee making for a relaxing and enjoyable stay.
