Sydney, as the capital, may get the bulk of the world’s attention, but Melbourne is Australia’s cool city, its artistic center, the city that gave to the world just about any Aussie actor or musician you can name, from Cate Blanchett to Hugh Jackman, from Kylie Minogue to Nick Cave—and we’ll take interesting company over landmark bridges and opera houses any day.
The Adelphi is the kind of small and stylish hotel that would seem too precious in (relatively) staid Sydney—but it’s a perfect match for this creative, fashion-forward town. This converted warehouse building by Australian firm Denton Corker Marshall is a favorite amongst architects, a fine example of what the modern minimal hotel can be, and the sort of place that shames the imitators. Many hotels make far less from the same palette of blonde wood and matte metal, and though road-sign yellow may be a daring choice for interiors in what is supposed to be a restful environment, there’s no question that they’ve made it work.
The hotel is perhaps best known for one of its most daring architectural flourishes: the rooftop lap pool, the transparent bottom of which extends out over the street below—fine for watching the pedestrians as you swim, as long as you’re comfortable with them watching you. But it’s the more traditional charms that make the Adelphi worth returning to; the guest rooms are exceedingly well put together, with striking modern furniture—yes, some of it yellow—and the views from the rooftop bar are extraordinary. It’s a hike from hip St Kilda, but close to all the high street shops, with all the conveniences of a city center hotel, like 24-hour room service and Ezard, a buzzing Modern Australian restaurant.
Very nice and helpful staff. Good location. Nice bath products in bathroom. I-pod dock in room. Spa on location. Nice restaurant on location.
I Disliked
Parts of hotel look like they need renovation. Small gym. Spa missing a strong ambience. Low-key vibe, which is good (i.e. not pretentious); but seems like one should be getting more for the money.
A small hotel located in the heart of Melbourne's laneways makes this is the perfect spot for a weekend getaway. The Adelphi ideally located for exploring Melbourne's CBD which is chock full of great little shops, coffee joints, bars and restaurants.
The room we had was a weel sized and featured a super comfy bed and large bathroom. Great minibar including plunger coffee and a good tea selection.
The service was generally friendly and prompt.
I Disliked
It may have been a design icon when it was built but it sure is looking tired now! The good news is it's apparently undergoing an upgrade. The bad news was that many of the promised upgraded room facilities (eg. iPod docking station; radio) wheren't in our room - when we asked for am iPod docking station to be bought up, the one we recieved was faulty.
The location of the Adelphi is prime. It is located just off of Swanson which is a major thoroughfare through the CBD and has trams that go to almost all locations of the city immediately there. Lots to do in the area with exceptional restaurants in an easy walking distance. The rooms were quiet, comfortable, and large. I would definitely stay here again.
I Disliked
Even though the hotel has recently undergone an "update" there are still some features that show significant wear. The flat panel TV had the welcome screen burned which disrupted the view of the images when watching TV. The shower/bathroom is a pretty open set up with poor ventilation so once you shower, you cannot be in the bathroom for about 10 minutes as it de-steams; water also tends to get all over the place. The clock, although featuring a cool projector to display the time on the ceiling, had broken pixels to that made reading the time difficult. Finally, and most unusual, they "ran out" of shower gel and shampoo.
Fantastic staff, great location right in the centre of Melbourne and whilst it was a bit nippy to use the pool it was a great weekend. We are sure to return soon.
I Disliked
Some of the fittings in the bathroom needed a bit of TLC (robe hook very loose etc)
The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.
This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.
How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?
We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.
This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.
The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.
Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!
This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:
Original
Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.
A personal opinion or recommendation
Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.
We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.
Non-commercial
Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.
Written with standard e-mail etiquette
This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
