Hotel Aleph is not for the faint of heart, or, for that matter, for those delicate souls disturbed by the color red. Though this hotel is part of the new wave of chic Italian boutiques, the decor doesn't exactly fit the standard white-on-white template.
The theme here is Dante's Divine Comedy, or more prosaically, Heaven and Hell — with a decided emphasis on the Hell part of the equation, as, presumably, the damned have more fun. American interior architect Adam Tihany has gone all out — there is not a speck of minimalism to be found.
Here, hell is above and heaven below. The building was once a bank, and the Paradise Spa occupies the former vaults, down in the basement. The color scheme here is a soothing blue, a relief after the unrelenting red of the ground floor's public spaces. The restaurant, Sin, is upstairs, as is the Dionisio Wine Bar, and both are outfitted in black and devilish red.
The guest rooms, thankfully, are a welcome break from the theme — they are a blend of ultra-modern design and a more idiosyncratic Thirties and Forties Italian feel. Comfort is key, appointments are rich, and the earthy colors are soothing after the sensory overload of the trip through hell. Black-and-white photos of Roman street scenes decorate the walls, and bring the whole experience back to earth a bit.
The advent of sleek modern design hotels in Rome is something we celebrate — finally a break from the overweening opulence of the old-fashioned palaces. Many modern hotels, by contrast, aspire to blankness, a sort of standardized all-white Zen as antidote to ornament. Aleph, though, is an experience all its own, an experience every bit as over-the top (in its own way) as those grand historical hotels.

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.
How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?
We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.
This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.
The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.
Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!
