There was a time when travel to Thailand meant one of two things: the bustling inner city of Bangkok or the densely developed island paradise of Phuket. These days, though, the accomplished traveler knows the country’s geography inside and out: Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin — and now Cha-Am, likely put on most Westerners’ map only because it’s the site of Alila’s newest boutique hotel.

This is the first venture outside of Indonesia for the design-conscious luxe-boutique group, and it’s not a tentative one. This place is self-assured, all clean lines and heavy stone, and it comes with all the trimmings: swanky minimalist accommodations, pristine sandy beach, full-service spa, and a restaurant serving an upscale take on the local cuisine. And a pool bar, just for good measure , serving light fare all day and then turning into an urban-style party spot at night.

It seems no amenity is spared in the guest rooms — vast bathrooms, home theaters with Apple TVs, even private plunge pools in the case of the Pool Villas. Best yet, though you’re quite comfortably removed from the crowds (hello Phuket!) you’re only twenty minutes from Hua Hin airport — and by now you know exactly where that is, right?

How to get there:

Alila Cha-Am is located at Petchaburi Beach, approximately a 2 1/2 hour drive from Bangkok through dense jungles and mountain ranges.

Kids:

Guests over the age of 12 are considered adults. Some rooms accommodate 3 or more. The "Pool Villa" room sleeps up to 3 guests. For crib/cot, must book "Horizon Room" room or larger. For 2 adults + rollaway bed, must book "Horizon Room" or larger. For 2 adults + 2 kids beyond crib age, must book "Pool Villa" room or larger.

Cribs are available and may be subject to an additional fee. Roll-away beds available for an additional fee of Bht1925. No additional charges for kids beyond crib/roll-away.

Fenced in pool available that allows kids. Babysitting services provided by screened hotel personnel at Bht300 per hour. The restaurant is kid-friendly with high chairs and a kids menu. Room service offers a kids menu.
