Alila, the Southeast Asian boutique-hospitality powerhouse, is expanding to the west, and they’ve alighted on Indian shores — the west-coast state of Goa, to be exact. There will be some of you who need little more encouragement than just the name, and it’s not hard to see why — the place looks pretty much exactly like what you’d expect from Alila in Goa, which is to say, crisp contemporary design, glassy infinity-edge pools, locally-inspired pitched-roof architecture, and a span of flawless sand between lush plantation land and the waters of the Arabian Sea.
The rooms and suites indulge Indian coastal style with a few visual references, but underneath that the concept is very much modern luxury. Though the mode of the day is unplugging, it’s not enforced — 40-inch LCD screens and wireless internet keep you connected. Most, however, come with terraces or balconies as well as deep soaking tubs, for a more low-tech form of recreation.
As for the facilities, you’ll find everything you expect from a boutique luxury resort, including pools, a spa, and separate family-friendly areas to keep the kids contained. This being India, there’s even pitch for playing cricket, the ideal holiday sport — not only is it more social than tennis, but it moves, most of the time, at a vacationer’s pace.

What I liked:
Facilities were fantastic -- the pool, spa and general layout of the hotel were fantastic. The beach was a little walk, but was a lovely, clean stretch of beach and ocean. Staff were very nice and friendly -- and the food at the Bistro restaurant was delicious.
What the hotel could do better:
Point 1: Room cleaning -- the towels and toilet paper we not replaced on a daily basis. Some days the cleaning staff would take all the used towels but only replace them with one clean towel. Toilet paper was also rationed like it was gold - they would leave a roll with only a little bit left, but not leave an extra fresh roll in case you ran out.
Point 2: Invite 'other' guests to Russian Christmas. Our stay overlaped Russian Christmas and the resort planned a huge party for all the Russians guest (literally 80% of the guests) - which was a nice idea and we thought would be fun. However we were informed through a note left in our room that we were not invited to the celebration and should look elsewhere outside the resort for food/entertainment that night. It was a bit weird.

What I liked:
The restaurant and its staff are excellent. Cooking class very good. Swimming pools were very good and have a great view over the rice paddies.
What the hotel could do better:
The quality of the furnishings in the rooms could be much better. We changed rooms but the shower blocked. The duty manager was very attentive but the rest of the staff didn't seem to care too much especially as the reception never picked up the phone!
