Alma Hotel & Lounge

Safe to say the boutique wave has finally crashed over Tel Aviv’s shores. It’s a fine moment for it to happen, too — long past are the days when blank walls and hard-edged minimalism were the height of hotel fashion. These days a new eclecticism rules the boutique roost, and nowhere is this more true than in the White City’s very own Alma Hotel & Lounge.

The exterior is an elegant if fairly unassuming Twenties townhouse, but the interior is a riot of color and texture, thanks to a collaboration between a local design studio and a local glass artist. To call it bohemian is almost too limiting — the rich play of eras and references ensures that its visual interest never fades.

And while it’s not quite the last word in luxury, Alma does come with a thoughtful complement of comforts, from (occasional) balconies, Bulgari bath products and in-room espresso makers to services like personal training, cooking lessons, and one fine little restaurant, the Alma Lounge. If you’re here for longer than a day, there’s more where that came from — the brother-and-sister team behind Alma is also responsible for no fewer than three other highly regarded Tel Aviv eateries.
