When it comes to hotels Boston is a bit of a puzzle. For whatever reason, there just aren’t as many stylish and innovative options as there ought to be — compare New York, where you’re absolutely spoiled for choice. Here to add one more to the scant supply of well-designed boutique hotels is the Morgans group, who’ve taken over a historic building in downtown Boston proper and installed the Ames.
The exterior is historic as ever, this landmark building showing every one of its hundred-plus years, its stately brickwork contrasting sharply with the new glass towers of the surrounding district. Once inside, though, it’s a different story, a sleek, pared-down look that’s not just a departure for Boston but for Morgans as well. While their new Mondrian in Miami boasts a design by the outrageous Marcel Wanders, the Ames exhibits a fashionable restraint in the person of David Rockwell, whose buildings and interiors tend to be more swanky than splashy.
There are a few subtle allusions to the 19th-century provenance of the building — an old-fashioned side lamp here, a Federalist-style table there — but mostly the interiors are made of light and space, their surfaces painted snow-white and ash-gray. As you go up the scale, the rooms only get sunnier, and the city views more dramatic.
Though it’s easy to imagine someone from the fashion or design world feeling perfectly at home here, Ames is never too cool for comfort. The sheeting is properly crisp, the duvets feathery, and the bathrooms and minibars are stocked with all the right top-shelf products. It’s hardly revolutionary stuff — just evidence that the Morgans group knows how to do hospitality as well as the aesthetics. We’re only surprised something like this didn’t happen in Boston sooner.
Please note: Ames Boston no longer has a restaurant and does not offer room service. Each room has a fully stocked minibar.

What I liked:
Interesting design. Lovely building.
What the hotel could do better:
I've never stayed in such a noisy room in my life. Apparently all suits are on the 3rd floor and they cannot control the loud noise and vibration from the train system below the hotel but I'm a heavy sleeper and it really kept me up ALL night. Music from lobby bar also makes its way to the rooms above...very late at night.

What I liked:
Fabulous location and amazing public spaces. Beautiful bar area and breakfast restaurant and it was nice having breakfast included.
What the hotel could do better:
Having a see-through glass wall in the shower visible from the bedroom was a bit strange. It may work for newlyweds but not so much for couples married over 20 years.
