Amira Hotel

Kucuk Ayasofya Mah. Mustafapasa Sok. No: 79, Sultanahmet

Istanbul, Turkey

Style: Contemporary Classic

Atmosphere: Lively

32 Rooms

Location’s not quite everything, but it’s certainly not unimportant either; and in Istanbul one could do quite a lot worse for a location than this. The Amira Hotel is deep, deep in the Sultanahmet, the historical heart of the city, around back of the Blue Mosque. This is where you expect to find some tourist trap charging an extortionate rate, not a smart little neo-Baroque boutique, with style to spare and a remarkably humane pricing philosophy.

The latter, of course, is a nutshell description of the Amira, with its thirty-two rooms in a plush, eclectic style, highlighted in white lacquer and red velvet. The standard rooms are stylish and comfortable enough, but they make up less than half of the Amira’s offering — you’ll be tempted to move up to a deluxe, but whichever you choose, you’ll find the same hardwood floors, the same king or double-twin beds, the same rain showers or Jacuzzi tubs.

Downstairs, the spa turns out to be a reasonably complete affair, perhaps a bit of a surprise given the Amira’s modest size — this is a hotel without a proper restaurant, after all. Then again food isn’t exactly hard to come by in this part of town, and the Amira does feature one very fine common space: the rooftop lounge makes the most of the hotel’s scenic Sultanahmet location.
