The very concept of a Maldives resort is one that’s hard to get wrong; the trick, one supposes, is getting hold of one of these shallow, sandy atoll islands, and after that, the rest is just details. After all, once you’re in your villa, on a pristine white sand beach, or in one of the suites on stilts over the water, it’s the setting that matters most.

So it’s on the execution, the details, that Anantara should be judged. Little things, like the style of the place, grass-roofed on the outside and unpretentious on the inside — spare, clean-lined, but not overly serious or reverent.

Anantara’s approach to luxury, too, is unassuming. This place certainly doesn’t lack for comforts, but nor does it bludgeon you with ostentation the way some of its peers do. Service, likewise, is faultless, but not showy — it would be unfair and a little weird to speculate about whether this has anything to do with Anantara’s Thai ownership and culture, but whatever the reason, friendly hospitality is in plentiful supply.

A largish handful of restaurants comes in handy, since you can’t exactly pop off to town for a bite, and the cooking school is an option if you’d like to take this part of the experience home. Aside from the always-popular option of total idleness, there’s actually plenty to do: the spa, the fitness center, the library, yoga, even a lighted tennis court, not to mention all manner of water sports — again, diving in the Maldives would be difficult to find fault with.
