Before a few years ago, Hua Hin was rather out of the way for international travelers, and was best reached by train or coach. Now four flights leave Bangkok each day for the Hua Hin airport. Survive the slightly claustrophobic journey to the heart of the northern Malay Peninsula and you’ll soon find yourself at Anantara Hua Hin, a 187-room spa resort from the local Thai mini-chain.

The hotel’s oceanside location overlooks the Gulf of Thailand, whose turquoise surface you’ll probably gaze at from your guest room. Like other resorts of a similar caliber, Anantara offers a range of housing options, from the comparatively basic garden view and sea view rooms to the ornate lagoon rooms with double-sized bathtubs and cozy private balconies with plush furniture and dining tables. And at the highest end of the scale are the Anantara suites, elegantly airy spaces outfitted in Thai silks, with verandahs large enough for entertaining.

Enjoy Thai take-out at home? You’ll be in heaven choosing from the array of gourmet local (and international) offerings at the restaurants and eateries of Anantara. And just because you can, you might consider having the evening’s first cocktail at the swim-up bar.
