In case you needed it, this is proof positive that Phuket, done right, is still absolutely extraordinary. Andara’s location, on a hillside up above Kamala Beach, on the island’s west coast, immediately places it in a different class — not for nothing is this stretch called the Millionaires’ Mile. Even by those standards, though, it’s something special, a collection of stylish modern-Thai villas and lodges, spread across a lush estate with seemingly unlimited views over the bay below.

The suites occupy the common buildings, and range from one to four bedrooms, all with separate living and dining areas and views out to sea, and most with private plunge pools. Freestanding villas, three to six bedrooms in size, offer a bit more privacy — all have pools, and they’re served by butlers and private chefs. Clearly the vibe is a bit more residential than the typical hotel suite — if you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to live in high Thai style, this is your chance to find out.

As for services and entertainment, there’s really nothing missing. There’s a well-equipped gym, a full-service spa, a central infinity-edge pool, and not just a beach club but a pair of yachts available for rental as well, complete with captain and crew. A hard life it most certainly isn’t. And while we do occasionally lament the passing of Phuket’s younger and wilder days, if the rough edges are going to be smoothed over, then they may as well be smooth.
