The Andaz London is a rare beast, a hip hotel right on top of Liverpool Station — one of just a handful of lodgings in the Square Mile, bucking the trend that generally sees City boys and girls (and their guests) flee for parts westward as soon as the closing bell rings. And despite its railway-hotel heritage, it’s had quite an upgrade, its interiors proof that modern design plays as well with bankers as it does with designers.
None of this is readily apparent from the outside — the red brick facade hasn’t changed much since 1868, but what lies behind it will blow your mind. The hotel’s axis has been swivelled, and there’s a new lobby, new floors, and galleries filled with bamboo plants and light. Many of the original Victorian details have been preserved — fireplaces the size of closets, intricate plaster moldings on the ceilings, and staircases wide enough to accommodate the largest of Victorian steamer trunks. But the center is the pièce de resistance, an atrium that resembles a cross between a miniature Guggenheim spiral ramp and an ice cream cone.
In contrast to the wow of the building, the rooms are practical, just what you’d expect from a businesslike City hotel. Better than the Eames chairs and Jacobsen lamps are the desks that double as dressing tables, and have a space for your hair dryer. The rooms on the top floors are, contrary to expectation, the smallest. They’re cute, but if a penthouse was what you were expecting, you should be warned. Having said that, the service is some of the nicest you’ll get in this town, efficient and attitude-free, and aesthetically, the GEH is unparalleled in London.
No valet car parking available on arrival, despite at least half a dozen staff standing around in reception. The lifts are also extremely slow so leave yourself plenty of time to get up and down to your room.
I arrived and they noted that on my last stay that the service grade I gave was a bit sub-par. They went all out and gave me a great experience. Two class room upgrade and lots of TLC.
I Disliked
The lobby coffee bar seems hit and miss. More attention needs to be paid here. One person on the staff said it was open. Another said it was closed. When we came back after walking the area it ended up being opened, and we wouldn't have needed to leave the hotel for a nice espresso.
i was reserved about a london hotel that was only 200 pounds, but the andaz left me amazed. the service and rooms were beautiful and the architecture magnificent. the breakfast was great as well.
I Disliked
the location though seemingly convenient because it is across from the liverpool stop, was not so much being that only the district and circle lines run through there.
The hotel was furnished moderately but in a very modern style. The location was fantastic situated right next to liverpool station. The gym facilities were great as well.
I Disliked
The shower / tub facility was a bit akward to get in and out of. It is not really suitable for anyone with back or mobility issues.
Pretty much everything - the in-house info journal was really up to date and not just pretending to be hip. The rooms surprisingly large for London and, surprise surprise, reasonable closet space, almost unheard of in most boutique or style hotels. Especially appreciated were the touches such as free soft drinks in the minibar and room service breakfast at no additional costs. And breakfast was great.
Highly recommended, although it was expensive.
I Disliked
Some of the front desk people were great, some less so.
The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.
This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.
How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?
We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.
This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.
The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.
Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!
This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:
Original
Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.
Relevant to other travelers
This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.
A personal opinion or recommendation
Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.
We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.
Non-commercial
Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.
Written with standard e-mail etiquette
This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

Tablet Inc. reserves the right to remove any hotel review or travel recommendation at its sole discretion, for violation of the above guidelines or for any other reasons.
These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
