Neither traditionally beer-hall Bavarian nor modern corporate-headquarters Munich, the Anna Hotel has embraced color along with the brilliance of a correctly placed bit of décor. It’s all very whimsical and, incongruously enough for this serious city, quite lovable.
Single and double rooms, ranging from cozy to generous, do show the beauty in details: a lovely curved chair, a pot of straight green grass, a petite statute of Buddha, a well-stocked, inclusive mini-bar. New York–based Donghia, a firm known for linking the traditional with the modern, handled the interiors; the results are very clean, very livable, and very comely. Bathrooms have walk-in showers, complete with red and purple mood lighting; some showers also come with built-in seats.
The few fancier rooms on the top floors have more space, both room-wise and view-wise. Put another way: the Panorama room, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, is very aptly named. Most windows are double-paned and therefore soundproof, an especially handy feature during the summer and early fall, when alfresco dining (and drinking) become the region’s most popular activity.
At the happening in-house restaurant and bar, seasonal German specialties get an Asian update, often via the sushi master. Breakfast is usually included with your stay. Guests are, of course, invited to try the hotel owner’s other nearby properties, including the Michelin-starred Königshof, and you’re walking distance from a range of other worthwhile entities, including the city’s best museums, central train station, subway stop, and the 130-room Residenz, once home to Bavarian kings.

What I liked:
The restaurant was excellent, as was the service in the restaurant.
What the hotel could do better:
A guide, placed in rooms, to hotel services and restaurants etc in the surrounding area would be useful. The selection of in-room toiletries was eccentric - combined shampoo/body wash, a small packet of tissues, a large box of tissues, and condoms. rather than doubling up on Kleenex, body lotion or separate shower gel would be an idea. Slippers were provided, but no bathrobes. That's a small quibble, but I have stayed at less expensive hotels which offered better service and in-room facilities that were selected with more thought.
The rain shower in my room did not work, and my choice of room, while confirmed ahead of time, was not available when I checked in.
