Au Coin du Feu

At this point the thing to do is just accept that the town of Megève — or at least its better hotels — belongs to the Sibuet group. The fourth Sibuet hotel among our selections in this charming little Alpine town is Au Coin du Feu, and it’s perhaps the coziest and most rustic of the bunch. With just twenty-three rooms it’s about as intimate as a ski chalet gets, and if you can’t quite fit all the guests around the massive central fireplace, after which the place is named, you can at least come tolerably close.

As usual the interiors are all rustic charm, about as far from modern minimalism as you can get and still be in France. We’re talking timbers, leather, antlers, and the kind of garish checkered upholstery that we’re quick to criticize elsewhere. Here a keen decorator’s eye makes all the difference.

The small size means it lacks some of the comprehensive features of the big resort hotels, but they’re more than made up for in pure alpine atmosphere. The restaurant is much more than serviceable, and quieter than the competitors — and if you’re in the mood for some luxury-hotel indulgence you can shuttle over to the sister (or should we say mother) hotel, Les Fermes de Marie, for a spot of spa treatment.

The hotel is seasonal, open from mid-December through the end of March.
