What was once the Beverly Carlton (and two neighboring apartment houses) is now the Avalon, a Fifties retro-style hotel packed with mid-century Eames, Noguchi and Nelson furniture to match its blocky blue facade and curvaceous hourglass-shaped pool, which we’d like to think is an homage to onetime resident Marilyn Monroe, but probably isn’t. Though outside the 90210 area code, the Avalon is still close enough to everything that matters, and you’ll likely be surprised by the quiet (and the low rates, for Beverly Hills at least).

California Modern is a good choice for a budget-minded hotel, less expensive than the hypermodern set design that is the modern boutique standard, and on balance more comfortable as well—and yet miles better looking than the utilitarian design of the corporate chains. Rooms are slightly more up-to-date, tempering what could be Jetsons kitsch with muted colors and modern bathrooms. The beds are anything but budget, decked out in the obligatory Italian linens, and the amenities are all a business traveler could ask for, including 24-hour room service and high-speed internet.

Suites come with sofa beds, in case you’re entertaining, and for longer stays try one of the two-bedroom villas, complete with kitchen, dining room, parking, a private patio and the full array of hotel services. Blue On Blue is the hotel restaurant (which, thankfully, is not literally blue-on-blue), a sort of upscale neighborhood diner, serving on Lucite tables in private cabanas around the pool. And as for the location, the Golden Triangle is nearby, for all your shopping and scene-making needs, and Santa Monica and the Sunset Strip are close at hand, but at the end of the day, you’ll be thankful for the quiet of the Avalon’s residential setting.

Charming, Friendly, Stylish Getaway

By Heatherwag based in New York

Stayed February 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

As has been noted by other Tablet Hotels users, the staff at that Avalon is a breath of fresh, attitude-free, air. Genuinely friendly and helpful, from the valets to the waitstaff to the front desk. During my visit the outdoor area was closed due to inclement weather (sad), but the groovy hourglass pool and citrus-toned cabanas looked lovely. I found the Blue-on-Blue restaurant/room service to be fantastic (seasonal New American). There's a glam yet unpretentious atmosphere in both the lobby and restaurant/bar, even though it feels a bit like you've wandered into an "Iconic Mid-Century Furniture" coffee table book (not a bad place to be, mind you...)

I Disliked

The rooms themselves felt a little dated (bulky TVs, unwieldy Wi-Fi system, finicky, low-pressure shower) and mine faced a rather traffic-y stretch of Olympic. But they were nonetheless comfortable, clean, roomy, and quiet.

I always come back...

By lvan dort based in Melbourne

Stayed October 2008

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

I always come back to the Avalon. It's cool, quiet and safe, it's mall enough that the staff remember who you are and look out for you, and I love the retro vibe and the chic, stylish and spacious rooms. It's a short drive to everything you need (and a very short walk to everything in Beverly Hills)

I Disliked

Since my last visit, the downstairs Blue On Blue restaurant, which was once lively and buzzing (I even spotted Julia Roberts there at one point back in 2004), now seems to have quietened down considerably. Although this may be a plus for some people who prefer the quieter atmosphere..

A diamond in the not so rough

By pli1 based in New York

Stayed July 2008

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

The rooms at the Avalon hotel are nice, not extraordinary. The location is fine, but again not a tremendous wow factor. But, the Avalon is distinguished by service standards that meet or exceed those of far pricier properties. From valet to check-in to restaurant, the property is blessed with a fantastic staff. Overall a nice change from ostentation and hype to a grounded great experience.

I Disliked

The overall property is totally fine, just slightly rough around the edges.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
