It would have been unthinkable a few short years ago, but today, just south of Cancún, tourist-kitsch capital of the Yucatán peninsula, there’s a small hotel so stylish (and sustainable) you’ll think you’ve walked in on a Dutch design expo — at least until the bartender hands over your room keys.

Courtesy of the same minds that brought us Mexico City’s Hotel Habita and Condesa DF, as well as Playa del Carmen’s neighboring Deseo, Hotel Básico is a high-design boutique hotel — but, like its sisters, a highly individual one. In this case it’s a concept that’s far from city glam, with floors made from recycled tires and twin rooftop pools made from converted oil tanks.

Unfinished concrete walls and exposed ductwork lend an industrial feel to the guest rooms, like something from a Bond villain’s island stronghold. Raised platform beds sit at the center of each room, surrounded by the sort of accessories you don’t often see in a hotel room — flippers for diving, a soccer ball, a Polaroid camera. A live video feed brings the beach conditions right to your plasma television, in case you need to check the surf or the scene before venturing out.

There's no mistaking the youthful energy about the place — there's music well into the night, and the atmosphere is anything but sedate. For all the funkiness, though, the Básico is anything but basic; the Caribbean view from the rooftop pools is stunning, and the pool deck cabanas come with built-in mattresses for luxurious lazing. Downstairs, an open-kitchen restaurant fashioned after a traditional puesto serves fresh and authentic Mexican seafood on a patio shaded by leafy trees.

How to get there:

Basico is approximately a 50 minute drive from Cancun International Airport. Airport transfers cost approximately $55 USD roundtrip. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.

Basico over Christmas

By jabrams836651 based in London

Stayed December 2008

Overall rating: Fair

I Liked

This is a fabulous hotel 20 hours a day. The rooms are gorgeous, the restaurant is great, the staff is delightful.

I Disliked

The rooms are just too noisy. The hotel is in the middle of stuff, which is great, but the soundproofing coule be much better. La Quinta keeps going until all hours and we were then woken by garbage collection and cars as morning came.

caskew

nightclub with rooms!

By caskew based in London

Stayed October 2008

Overall rating: Fair

I Liked

Loved the room design (there are some brilliant quirky touches) the cool, funky atmos, sunbeds on the roof, the cute friendly waiters and cocktails!

I Disliked

After a short stay it started to all feel a bit 'design-over-quality' - yes the whole hotel is as cool as you like, but I wouldn't recommend staying longer than two nights as it's not really relaxing (DJ on the roof until after 1am - feels like he's spinning tunes in your bedroom!) but for a couple of nights of partying in Playa del Carmen it's perfect. Although the waiters are v.friendly, people on reception are fairly useless. This place is more 'nightclub-with-rooms' than outique hotel and it begins to feel like the rooftop clubbers rather than the hotel guests come first.

Gorgeous

By ladytubb based in London

Stayed September 2008

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

The staff, the rooms, the food, the pools and rooftop. The rooms were truly the most wonderful rooms I had ever stayed in. And the roof top was blissful, the cocktails perfectly made, and the whole image made me feel like i was on a seriously decadent holiday. And Basico took the tablet hotels membership very seriously and we were upgraded to the best room in the hotel.

I Disliked

Sometimes practicality was forgotten whilst this hotel was trying to achieve a fantastic looking hotel. The noise in the room was almost unbearable and anymore than 3 nights, and a good pair of earplugs, and I would have been officially sleep deprived. Also, the rooms had very poor air con, and it as hot, and blinds made of black rubber which nether offered privacy, in a room where 2 walls of glass needed privacy, or heat insulation.

Perfect hotel

By sbender506383 based in New York

Stayed July 2008

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

The Rooms and public spaces (as well as an amazing restaurant and bar) made this quite possibly my favorite hotel ever. It's different--I mean most hotels don't have poured concrete walls and inner tubes in your room--but it was at the same time very luxurious and the combination of indoor/outdoor space was unparalleled.

I Disliked

I didn't mind but it does stay loud at night b/c the bar on the roof is open till 1am.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
