Maps don’t generally do Mauritius justice. The tiny island in the southwest Indian Ocean is a mere speck next to the continent of Africa, but it’s actually quite enormous, if you’re measuring characteristics like white-sand beaches and panoramic sunsets. And Beachcomber Trou Aux Biches has some of the best of both. It’s not for nothing that it’s known as one of the most romantic hotels in Mauritius.

Recent renovations have only augmented the property’s village-resort feel. Thatched villas nestle among the palm groves, while carefully crafted gardens grow out of the various pools. A dock culminates in a gazebo, surrounded by softly lapping waves, putting the horizon this close. The Beachcomber group essentially inaugurated high-end tourism on the island, first opening a luxury hotel in 1952. After six decades these folks know a thing or two about making sure your experience in the tropics soothes, satisfies, and sates.

Some rooms have private pools, some have outdoor showers. The spa too blurs the line between inside and outside, offering a range of treatments, including seaweed-based “algotherapy,” in open-air or air-conditioned cabanas. Some suites come with butlers and beachfront verandas, just as you’d expect, although every accommodation style manifests fine, sensitive service. Then there are the tennis courts and bocce lawns and water sports and on-site shops and six restaurants. But nothing beats being on the beach, which abuts a lagoon (oh yes, it’s blue). Looking at the sky and sea will make you feel as if the whole world had gone wide-angle and infinite. Put your significant other in the picture, and that’s a fantasy made real.
