Not “Cassandra,” but CasaSandra. As in Sandra’s place — in this case a Cuban-born writer and artist named Sandra Pérez, who has transformed a little strip of coast on Isla Holbox, just offshore from the Yucatán, into a pared-down, unpretentious, funky little beach resort. It’s intended to be as much like a home as a hotel can reasonably be, just a dozen rooms and suites spread among a few low buildings with sunset views over the sea.
It’s pretty much the opposite of a “design hotel,” with local artisan–made or antique furnishings and a ramshackle, bohemian feeling that fits well with the low-key anti-resort vibe of the place. They’re comfortable, with fine linens and all the equipment you really need, but no messing about with marble or gold trim, or any of the other trappings of the modern ultra-luxury boutique.
Here the luxury is in the small things, like the beach with its grass-roofed palapas and the hammocks strewn about the property. Here bird-watching and shark-spotting tours (don’t worry, they’re friendly whale sharks, nothing vicious) take the place of jet-skis and speedboats, and the intimate little restaurant and pool bar are the extent of the nightlife.

What I liked:
The service was exceptional and the food was fantastic. This is a high quality hotel with a breath taking location and very laid back atmosphere that is exploding with personality. We LOVED it!
What the hotel could do better:
Water temperature in shower was unpredictable. Couldn't always get hot water.

What I liked:
Location, location, location. Isla Holbox does not have much in the way of nightlife but it does have miles of quiet, beautiful, virtually-untouched beaches. If your idea of a good vacation is "getting away from it all" this is really the place for you. In addition, the staff at the hotel were friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the area (and even about nearby Playa del Carmen). I would definitely return CasaSandra.
What the hotel could do better:
Rooms are clean, comfortable and have a semi-rustic charm to them, complemented by the organic, locally-produced bath amenities, but they lack some of the polish that urban guests may be accustomed to. Water pressure and temperature in particular was an issue during our stay.
