Canouan Island, St. Vincent & Grenadines
Style: Contemporary Classic
Atmosphere: Quiet
40 Rooms
It’s not the most novel idea under the sun, but when it comes to unplugging it’s hard to beat a Caribbean beachfront luxury-villa resort. And it’s equally difficult to come up with a more inspiring setting than Canouan Island, a speck of a place in the Grenadines whose lush, forested landforms are ringed by white sand beaches and sheltered by a barrier reef. What makes it particularly relevant for our purposes, of course, is something more than just the scenery, however inspiring; it just happens to be home to the Canouan Resort at Carenage Bay.
Here the accommodations at the bottom of the range are 1300-square-foot one-bedroom suites with private pools and Italian marble floors, which ought to give you some idea of what sort of place the Canouan Resort is. One step up you’ll find two-bedroom suites, otherwise identical except for the added space, and from there it’s all villas, in two-, three- and four-bedroom varieties.
The services, similarly, are remarkable not for their uniqueness but for their completeness. The reef and its waters make for fine diving, obviously, and the beaches are splendid enough to tempt guests away from their pools. A handful of restaurants tend to their culinary needs, and a kids club organizes activities for the little ones while Mom and Dad are at the hilltop spa or the Jim Fazio–designed championship golf course.
How to get there:
