Punta Cana may be the Dominican Republic’s best-known holiday destination, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that it’s often possible to go very right by lighting out for less familiar territories. Barahona is one of those places; here, on the southern coast of the island of Hispaniola, closer to the Haitian border than to Santo Domingo, is where you’ll find the Casa Bonita Tropical Lodge.

And if we’ve learned a second thing, it’s that the most remarkable hotels are often the most modestly named. Suffice it to say that “pretty house” doesn’t even come close to covering it. This lush hilltop estate was once a private home, but two renovations later — though still under private ownership — it’s evolved into a striking 12-room boutique escape, with rooms in a spare mod-rustic style and public spaces, such as the infinity-edge pool, that border on the sublime.

Given the hilly, forested setting, Casa Bonita might in fact remind one rather more of certain parts of Costa Rica than of the beach scene at Punta Cana — it’s a regular nature reserve, complete with nature walks, thermal springs and Villa Marian, a majestically secluded waterfall. It’s far from landlocked, however; just down the hill is Bahoruco Beach, a renowned local surf spot and a gateway to all the Caribbean has to offer.
