Casa Morada brings the concept of the boutique hotel to the Florida Keys, land of retirees and flip-flop-wearing anti-fashionistas. And this isn't even Key West, an island that is known for its nightlife, even if it's not exactly Miami Beach — Islamorada is the sport fishing capital of the Caribbean, hardly the most obvious place for veterans of Ian Schrager's hotel company to set up shop.

Then again, Casa Morada isn't exactly the Delano; this is a fairly restrained boutique hotel, at least on the outside, not a world apart from the quiet seaside motel it once was. Tons of white sand were trucked in to create the perfect Caribbean beach, and a great deal of landscaping was done, but all of it looks perfectly natural — one would never guess that the grotto carved from the native rock in the center of the property is less than two years old.

The interiors are a bit more conspicuously designed, though still subtle; in the suites (no single rooms here!) you will find clean lines and minimal modern furnishings mixed with Mexican antiques, rather than the design-magazine whimsy some boutiques put on. Some suites have open-air Jacuzzis, and all feature private gardens or terraces, DVD players, and a selection of books — this is the kind of hotel where people actually read, rather than preening in the nightclub (no, there isn't one).

In a way, that's the whole point of this Islamorada location — it's close enough to Miami (90 minutes, only half as far as Key West) to attract the kind of urban professionals who will appreciate the style and atmosphere of a boutique hotel, but far enough out to dissuade the lobby-bar scenesters. This is a hotel to stay in, not to be seen in, and though there is a thriving tourist business on the island (and thus plenty of restaurants and plenty to do) it is a bona fide vacation destination, not a traveling fashion show.

Hotel Policies:

A minimum stay of 2 nights is required for arrivals on Friday. No arrivals on Saturday. A 5 night minimum stay is required from December 21 -December 31.
