The quietly stylish Mexican town of San Miguel de Allende is the perfect setting for a classic refuge like the Casa de Sierra Nevada, equal parts 16th-century residence and modern luxury boutique hotel. It’s one of just a few Orient Express hotels in North America, which speaks well to its general high level of service — but it feels like anything but a chain hotel, so clearly is its old-world charm allowed to shine through.
Thirty-seven rooms and suites are divided among six colonial mansions, and they’re all different, keeping to the floor plans of the original houses. Even the smallest rooms are quite large, and the suites even more so, most with working fireplaces. And despite the name, the Deluxe One Bedroom Suites are the most up to date — the décor is still classic, with timbered ceilings and ornate woodwork, but the appointments are luxury-hotel modern, from the LCD televisions to the private plunge pools.
Its claim on the upper end of San Miguel de Allende’s luxury market is solidified by a casual restaurant, and the full-service Laja spa — enough to make the Casa de Sierra Nevada a complete package, without even mentioning the latest addition, a school teaching Mexican cooking.
How to get there:
Casa de Sierra Nevada is 177 miles from Mexico City. It is a 1 hour 30 minute drive from Del Bajío International Airport and one hour from Querétaro International Airport. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.

What I liked:
My wife and I first were shown a room that had a queen-size bed and was a little on the small side. We were immediately offered a much larger room across the courtyard that made my wife clap with delight. Either room would have been fine -- both had wood-burning fireplaces, a perfect amenity for the cool nights -- but the large one was glorious.
-Discrete, low-key street profile.
-Rooms separated into different buildings provide an intimate, private atmosphere.
-Pool is in a beautiful garden.
-Great restaurant.
-Impeccable, attentive service: why you stay in a hotel like this.
What the hotel could do better:
Water pressure is surprisingly weak and poor. Understandable that hot water could take some time but inexcusable that shower and sink pressure was so low (the opposite of another Orient-Express hotel, the Miraflores Park, whose shower is perfect). You'd think Orient-Express would have solved this problem.
Also, water is unfiltered. We went through a shameful amount of water bottles.
