There was a time when Playa del Carmen itself was a nice quiet break from the bustle of Cancún. Now it’s a full-fledged resort town, and for a bit of the old, undeveloped Riviera Maya you’ll drive a little farther down the coast, to the barely-there Casa de las Olas, just five oceanfront suites on a stretch of beach just past the ancient Mayan walled city of Tulum.
The look is breezy, pared-down, contemporary — but Casa de las Olas is about much more than the look. These suites are tailor-made for unplugging, open to the sea air, with plentiful space for lounging, for contemplating the Caribbean or nothing at all. Kitchens are standard, which makes self-catering an option, but it’s by no means the only option — the staff is happy to direct you to the best of the local restaurants.
Tulum, thankfully, is a long way from becoming a major resort town, and a few miles in the other direction is the Sian Ka’an nature reserve, a wonderland of well-preserved wildlife as well as dozens of distinct archaeological sites. Closer by there’s ample opportunity for snorkeling or biking, and the surrounding countryside is packed with cenotes, deep-water swimming holes, a delightfully low-key local attraction.
Please note: There is a 3-night minimum stay requirement at Casa de las Olas.
How to get there: Casa de las Olas is located 170km (2h) from the Cancun International Airport. Transfers can be organized for USD110 for up to 2 guests, per way. Please contact CustomerService@TabletHotels.com for assistance with airport transfers.

What I liked:
Secluded but yet so close to Tulum beach restos and the rest...the host Jimmy is off the charts in terms of making you feel at 'home'.
What the hotel could do better:
Nothing, had a wonderful stay!

What I liked:
Location, location, location. Casa de las Olas is the last hotel on a sparsely populated stretch of gorgeous white-sand beach. Hotel rooms and common areas are designed and built to stay cool naturally thanks to constant ocean breezes and shady palm trees.

What I liked:
Amazing service. Off the map location. Friendly, engaging atmosphere. Delightful beach. Afternoon coconuts. Truly off the grip- sustainable resort.
