This tiny private island off the coast of Belize aims to deliver the last word in luxury — today’s version of which looks less and less like a four-hundred-room five-star palace, and more and more like, well, a tiny private island.
Intimacy and privacy, it seems, are the new currency of luxury. Cayo Espanto begins with four acres of land, surrounded by waist-deep crystal blue waters. Guests are lodged in one of just five sprawling rustic villas, each one featuring a private plunge pool and walls that fold away to let in the sea breeze. Villas are serviced by dedicated butlers, and you can expect a visit from the hotel chef — the night’s menu is tailored to your preferences, and dinner is served either in your villa or in one of many secluded spots around the island.
All manner of seafaring activities are available, as well as tours of the neighboring islands and jaunts to the Mayan ruins of the mainland — and spa treatments are on offer for those whose tastes run to the less active. Mostly, though, you come to Cayo Espanto to disappear. In terms of comforts and service — and prices, to be frank — it’s on the level of the top suites in the finest city hotels. Combine this with the location, a private Eden in the tropics, and the result is something truly remarkable.
How to get there:
Guests can fly to Belize International Airport and from there take a 17 minute inter-island flight to San Pedro. It is a 7 minute boat ride from San Pedro to Cayo Espanto in the hotel's own shuttle. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
