Cesar Resort & Spa

Marrakech’s abundant upscale lodgings have long been divided into two camps: the traditional courtyard-house riads and the contemporary European-style luxury hotels. And while it’s not quite accurate to say the Cesar Resort & Spa is the best of both worlds, it is something of a hybrid — it’s essentially a modern luxury resort, but with echoes of traditional riad hospitality, whether it’s the courtyard pool surrounded by daybeds or the heavy, weathered wooden doors in the rooms and suites.

Ultimately, though, it’s the resort aspect that wins out. The rooms are big and extremely well turned out, clad in what must be tons of textured stone, decorated with stylish modern furniture and intricate carved screenwork. The suites, naturally, are even bigger, from the juniors to the lofts to the two-bedroom Cesar Appartement. In any size they’re lacking for nothing in terms of comfort, from the heaping king beds to the stylish spa-like bathrooms.

But it’s the shared comforts that turn the Cesar from a hideaway into a proper resort. The spa is a heavenly vision in white marble, dramatically lit and fully equipped — far, far beyond the typically humble hammam. A multitude of pools ensure there’s always an easy way to beat the heat, including one on the roof terrace with a far-ranging view. And the restaurant and bar turn the Cesar into a bit of a nightspot, the former serving upscale Moroccan and international cuisine, the latter spreading out onto that roof terrace to make the most of the desert night.
