Chambers bills itself as a Soho hotel with a Midtown address, and truth be told, that’s not far off the mark — up here in the Fifties, off the main shopping drag of Fifth Avenue, the last thing one expects to see is a small boutique hotel with loft-style guest rooms and fashion-forward, subtly Eastern interiors. Yet that’s precisely what Chambers is, and its uniqueness has made it something of a hit, miles from both the stuffy high seriousness of the midtown luxury hotels and the relentless whimsy of the youth-market boutiques.

Oversized wooden doors and a towering fireplace open up a surprisingly spacious lobby, remarkable given the limitations of the compact space the hotel has to work with. Upstairs each floor’s landing and corridors are individually designed by a different artist — some are upbeat and sunny, others darker and moodier.

Not at all dark or moody, however, are the guest rooms, fashioned after downtown artists’ lofts, all open space and rough-finished concrete walls, hung with contemporary artworks and fitted with stylish modern furnishings. Platform beds are piled with fine linens, flat-screen televisions and DVD players are standard, and the sleek modern bathrooms are stocked with Bumble and Bumble bath products.

Some of the pricier suites come with private terraces, offering sublime city views — these are perfect for entertaining, and sizeable enough for bigger functions if need be. The mezzanine and lobby lounges are a modern midtown meeting point, and outside? If you can’t find what you’re looking for within five blocks of 56th and 5th, it probably doesn’t exist.

Chambers - Excellent Customer care

By grantson based in San Pedro Garza García

Stayed April 2009

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

On arrival they didn't have my room available and had to put me into a slightly lower level room for the 1st night. I received a personal call from the manager in the morning and they upgraded me to a suite for the rest of my stay, excellent customer care!

I Disliked

If you are in a lower floor room the street noise could be noticeable at night, but you are just off 5th Ave so it's to be expected!

THE CHAMBERS HOTEL in NYC

By OneGuess based in North Hollywood

Stayed January 2009

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

I LOVE this hotel. As great as this hotel is, I have to say it is the people who work there that is the star. I first stayed at The Chambers when they were refinishng their wood floors in the lobby area. I was not happy with the spacial work around to get this work done, but the staff were s great I knew I had to try it again on another trip. cut to - I have been to The Chambers two more times since and feel it is my home away from home in NY. The style, furnishihngs, restaurant, great suites, free internet and botted water and more make me feel at home, but not moe than th staff which I still can not say enough about.

I Disliked

I only have the smallest of observations to make to make this hotel better. They are: Please add hooks on the wall in the entry hall of most of the rooms to accomodate coats in the winter because the closet spaceis limited. Give the wash basins more counter space (for women stuff) by adding some of the great wook woodwork to the sides of the sinks and add a wall towel hook nearby the sink for the hand towel. These are small things in the whole picture of a GREAT hotel! LG

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
