City Hotel

Think of the name as something of a nudge in the right direction. While Thessaloniki may be Greece’s second city, the drop-off in size from Athens is a substantial one. So it may be some surprise to find a boutique hotel as stylish and urbane as City Hotel in such an ancient and seemingly sleepy Greek city.

“Seemingly,” however, is an important word. It turns out that City Hotel is an exercise in knowing your audience. For the fact is that Thessaloniki, in spite of its moderate size, is an extremely festive place — and the sort of people who are in possession of such a fact are also likely to be the same sort of people who make up a design-oriented boutique hotel’s clientele.

The rooms are crisp, clean and sunny, their predominant white and wood tones livened by a splash of the olive green that’s customary to this region of Greece (in contrast with that familiar Aegean blue). Doubles start out cozy and affordable, while suites splash out in fairly lavish style — and families find themselves catered to as well, in mid-sized rooms with pull-out sofas for the small ones.

Facilities include a gym, spa, and 24-hour room service, while dining options range from a buffet breakfast and light all-day dining to a proper formal dinner in the City Hotel’s main restaurant. But don’t feel the need to treat it as a resort — like any decent city hotel, City Hotel offers easy access to all the finer points of urban life.
