Important information about traveling with kids:

Some hotels may charge extra for a rollaway bed or a crib - depending upon age. This possible extra charge is not always displayed by the hotel to appear with the list of available rates offered.

In order to make sure that you see the exact rate that you will be charged for an accommodation for more than 2 adults, it is best to double-check by emailing us at customer service with your dates and the ages of your children. We will be happy to confirm rates and availability for you.

We now have a new service dedicated to those Tablet Hotels users traveling with children that searches only the verified kid-friendly hotels. Search TabletKids Hotels

The Commune by the Great Wall Kempinski is most often described as an architectural museum, a design exhibition, an exercise in cutting-edge modernism — architourists travel from all over the world to walk its polished wood and stone halls and admire the work of two dozen of Asia’s leading architects.

To fully experience the Commune, however, you have to live it. It’s one thing to aesthetically appreciate these (admittedly sublime) structures against the backdrop of the rugged Chinese countryside; it’s another thing altogether to wake up and gaze out at the lush green hills through floor-to-ceiling windows, and live surrounded by stunning avant-garde interiors and classic modern furnishings by the likes of Marc Newson and Karim Rashid, among many others.

The original 11 villas are massive, ranging from four to six bedrooms, and are essentially luxurious experimental mansions. A new partnership with the Kempinski hotel company has brought about 31 new villas — cut from the same experimental cloth as the rest of the Commune, but sized (and budgeted) for individual travelers rather than moguls.

If you’re interested in the absolute height of modern architecture and luxury hospitality, by all means, book a villa. For the rest of us, the Kempinski additions are the best sampler of China's newest architectural wonder.

How to get there:

Commune by the Great Wall is approximately a 1 1/4 hour drive from Beijing Capital International Airport, 20 km away from the main train station (Qing Long Qiao station) and a 1 1/4 hour drive from Beijing's city center. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers from Beijing.

Modern Style in the shadow of the Great Wall

By amountjoy based in Brookline

Stayed January 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

We were housed in a four bedroom villa that we had to ourselves. The staff took us on a private tour of three of the original villas. The staff drove us to the Great Wall (for a price, about $30) and picked us up when we were ready to come home. They also arranged (for a price, about $100 each way) a car with driver from Beijing (about an hour drive) and back to the airport on exactly our schedule. The restaurant had an excellent western style dinner that we enjoyed as well as a fixed price Chinese menu that was generous and tasty.

I Disliked

The Spa was beautiful and had great service but we would have liked just a simple hot tub on the deck of the villa without all the fanfare of a spa treatment.

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

I like the hotel surrounding, atmosphere, the architecture design and the private Great Wall very much.

I Disliked

- I went from Guangzhou, it means it would take me 2.5hrs flight and 3hrs taxi to arrive the hotel. Unfortunatelly, the traffic jamed that day due to the National Holiday. After the tired journey, it decreased the excitement a lot. - I feel the staff are not happy to work in the hotel because they all look cool and no smile, including their look, their voice and etc.

Overall rating: Fair

I Liked

After complaining about our room we were moved to a much more suitable one.

I Disliked

We phoned for an airport transfer with 3 hours notice and were told that it couldn't be arranged but that we would have no problem getting a taxi at the airport. Not the case! It took us 45 minutes to find a cab driver that would take us out to the place! We were not happy!

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question.
