A few miles from the Spanish border, on Portugal’s southern coast, where the Atlantic edges ever closer to the Mediterranean, is the municipality of Castro Marim. It’s here that an writer/farmer and his wife have turned a working family farm (still growing olives, quince, oranges and figs) into Companhia das Culturas, a eight escape which is, in terms of scale, more bed and breakfast than hotel — but which, when it comes to style and atmosphere, is the equal of many a more elaborate hotel.
So subtle is the design that, unless you’re particularly keyed in, you might not notice it’s designed at all. Pared-down spaces in whitewashed wood exude a certain centered calm, and while you’ll find none of the extravagances of a luxury hotel, it’s hard to argue with the simple comforts of these thoughtful rooms (not to mention the pool).
The old olive mill is now something of a social nexus, a library lounge with an honor bar, and the breakfast is a particular treat, accompanied by fresh fruits and jams from the hotel’s organic farm. You’re not far from the town, or from the beach, more Mediterranean than Atlantic in aspect (read: not so cold), but en suite, without a television, life here is as quiet as you could possibly want it to be.

What I liked:
We absolutely loved this place. There was such a tranquil air about it that we fell in love with it immediately. While we ran about the coast in search of sights and adventures, we were just as excited to get back to the hotel. The breakfasts in the morning were impeccable and the dinner they set up for us was simply amazing. In hindsight we would have done dinner there every night if we had known.
What the hotel could do better:
Nothing, had a wonderful stay!

What I liked:
It's really more of a designer B&B than a hotel (which was a pleasant surprise) and Tina was lovely and really made us feel at home. Breakfast was amazing, and the common spaces were wide, well-appointed and the honesty bar was a delight as well.
We stayed in the Junior Suite which was split level, with the bedroom/double bed upstairs, but there was a single bed on the lower level, so you could very easily come as a couple with a friend/sibling or child as well and stay. The shower facilities were lovely.
The outside spaces look exactly like the pictures. If it was warmer we would have taken a dip in the pool.
It was a supremely relaxing weekend, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
What the hotel could do better:
It would have been nicer to have better directions or signage - we arrived in the evening and were a bit confused about the entrance.
