Compass Point
West Bay Street
Gambier, Nassau, Bahamas
Style: Cutting-Edge

Nassau conjures shudders in many and no wonder - bright pink tourists in lurid Hawaiian shirts and baseball hats crowd the streets. But there's a softer side to Nassau. Just eight minutes from the airport, in the quiet neighborhood of Gambier lies Compass Point. Shells deck the railings. Eight sided bungalows sway on stilts. The paint is so vivid you can spot the resort from miles away - yellow roofs, turquoise shutters, bright pink chairs with seats the color of the sky. Here, away from the cruise ships, you can truly appreciate the green waters and white beaches that have made the Bahamas famous.
Forget souvenir shops, there isn't even another hotel in sight. In fact the busiest thing about Compass Point is its color scheme. If you're excitable, rest assured indoors is calmer with natural wood from wall-to-wall and floor to ceiling, even in the bathrooms. Rooms are large but simple with cheery batik bedspreads. All have ocean views but the best have outdoor kitchens.
If eight o'clock rolls around and you're starved for some action, evening entertainment is guaranteed. The Compass Point restaurant is a local hub as in the Caribbean -- where fresh, modern cuisine can be hard to find -- good food is a guaranteed attraction.
Every night it's packed with locals and guests alike crowding underneath umbrellas, watching the goings on in the kitchen and munching on conch sushi. If you're a rock n' roller, the famous Compass Point Studio, located across from the hotel, has hosted the Rolling Stones, Robert Palmer, Bob Marley and Lenny Kravitz and which adds to some of the night-life. At Compass Point, you may be startled to be so far away from the Nassau that you know, but you'll love the Nassau you've discovered.
