It’s as good a demonstration as any of the appeal of an independent hotel. The stunning Caribbean beach views and the discreet Grand Cayman privacy are indeed perks. But the key is ultimately the ownership: hotels run by travelers often function more thoughtfully than those run by corporations. And a hotel run by a traveler who returned home to become a hotelier, as is the case at Cotton Tree, is the sort of hotel that gets us every time.

Heather Lockington’s Caymanian heritage comes through everywhere: from the note cards with whimsical drawings and traditional sayings left on the bed, to the black-and-white photos of the island in the 1940s, to the fresh local flowers artfully arranged daily. Her experiences around the world help her intuit what families and couples might need on their Caribbean vacations: the four two-bedroom cottages include a kitchen with breakfast items, snacks, and drinks that beat a mini-bar any day and a bathroom stocked with full-sized products, a delight for anyone who’s run out of the standard Barbie-sized lotion halfway down one arm. Each wee house is painted its own shade of pastel and comes with flip-flops and sunscreen. Concierges set up all activities, including biking in the nearby national park and dolphin swimming. Cotton Tree requires a three-night stay, which guarantees guests enough time to really relax into the place.

Close by are restaurants and the famed Seven Mile Beach, more appropriate for laying out and swimming than the scenic-yet-rocky one abutting Cotton Tree. On site are gardens with oft-blooming avocado and other trees, a swimming pool, and a spa center, but treatments can be arranged on the balcony or terrace.
