It seems every hotel five minutes or more outside of a major city attempts to sell itself as some sort of escapist fantasy. It’s no overstatement at all, though, to say that visitors to Cradle Mountain Lodge are leaving the civilized world behind. Here in the wilderness of central Tasmania, at the edge of the Cradle Mountain/Lake St. Clair National Park, you’re hours from any city, deep in one of the world’s last primeval landscapes, an ancient forest surrounded by mountain lakes and rocky peaks, with only thousand-year-old pine trees for neighbors.

The central lodge building is surrounded by ninety timber cabins, each nestled into the woods, providing views of the river, the lake or the dense old forest. Inside the design is contemporary, going easy on the rustic atmosphere, and including a number of modern luxuries including CD players, featherbeds and goose-down duvets, and notably excluding televisions, a diversion that one assumes would be contrary to the organizing principle of a place like Cradle Mountain Lodge.

Guests choose from an array of outdoor activities — Cradle Mountain offers a selection of mapped hikes and walks, as well as mountain biking, canoeing or horseback riding excursions. For a little relaxation, try the Waldheim Alpine Spa, complete with steam room, sauna, hot tub and plunge pool, and massage and beauty treatments. Or, perhaps most restful of all, retire to your cabin and just watch the wildlife go by.

How to get there:

Cradle Mountain Lodge is approximately a 2 1/2 hour drive from Launceston, 1 1/2 hours from Burnie, 1 1/4 hours from Devonport and 4 1/2 hours from Hobart. Cradle Mountain Lodge offers a scheduled guest transfer service Friday thru Monday between Devonport and the hotel using air conditioned Landcruisers or Mini-Buses. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange transfers.
