Hoteliers in Rome seem to feel the pressure of thousands of years of civilization — most hotels strive to be as monumental as the city they serve. A place like Crossing Condotti, by contrast, shows there’s wisdom in more modest ambitions. It’s hardly a hotel at all; but then again, five swanky rooms in a townhouse just off the Spanish Steps is probably truer to the notion of contemporary Roman luxury than any number of marbled, colonnaded grand hotels.

This isn’t a place to be pampered. Crossing Condotti lacks even room service, to say nothing of a restaurant or anything more. Then again it’s meant to be little more than a glamorous little pied-à-terre, and a kitchenette with a Nespresso machine should be all you need before you hit the streets — this is more or less the center of all things retail in Rome, and is surrounded by more restaurants, bars and historical and cultural sites than you could care to name.

Room interiors matter perhaps more here than in the average hotel, since that’s practically all there is to the place. Fortunately they’re stylish and contemporary, and more than just a little comfortable — after a long day scrambling around Rome a decent bath and some high-end linens are the least you could ask for.

Guests should notify the hotel in advance if they will be checking in after 6:30PM.
