The phrase “airport hotel” is one we often catch ourselves using as shorthand for the uninspired and uncomfortable places that are the antithesis of everything we at Tablet hold dear. So it’s kind of a big deal when one of them turns out to be as sleek, stylish and thoughtfully put together as any European-capital design boutique. Well, when the facts change, as some great man or another said, we change our minds. And if airport hotels in Los Angeles or elsewhere start looking more like the Custom Hotel, then we’re going to be eating a lot of crow.
Little danger, for now. The Custom is just about one-of-a-kind; it’s still a concrete tower, not much could be done about that, but it’s one with a poolside bar and cabanas, an attractive wood-paneled lobby bar, even a DJ lounge and an outdoor fire pit. And the rooms: nobody minds a tower hotel when they get a look at the views, and the bedrooms come equipped with all the necessities, including free wi-fi and iPod attachments. It’s a good deal, a long way more stylish than it needs to be, and if you don’t need to be within walking distance of much of anything, it’s not at all inconvenient — and this being LA, you probably weren’t planning on walking anywhere anyway.

Custom Hotel is a 5-minute drive from Los Angeles International Airport and offers a complimentary door-to-door airport shuttle, available from 5AM to 2AM. The shuttle service is available on request, so please call the hotel at +1 310.645.0400 when you arrive at Los Angeles International. Parking is also available at the property for $20 USD per night.

What I liked:
Closeness to the airport.
What the hotel could do better:
Pretty much everything was wrong. So far I stayed in 4 hotels that I found on Tablet and all of them were terrific. This one was so disappointing that Tablet should take it off. This is the type of hotel that tries to have that 'cool' factor but fails miserably. The pictures on Tablet set a certain expectation but it just isn't so. The hotel looks like they tried to make it special with a budget of about $100. My room was bare minimum, Ikea style, Paint was peeling off of the tiles in the bathroom (as during renovation they didn't change the tiles just painted them - silly!), rust, caulk all over the place, thin cement cover on the floor cracking and chipping. Putting cool shampoos in a bathroom does not make a good hotel. My STRONG vote is to take this place off of Tablet. I want to be able to trust this site and this choice has shaken my confidence. At least if you book a cheap motel you know what to expect. Classic bait and switch example. I guess I feel pretty strongly about this :).
