It’s true that Boracay is no longer the undiscovered paradise that it once was. But a visit quickly reveals that the natural charms that made it famous are still very much in evidence. There are still plenty of beaches covered in feathery white sand, and Discovery Shores has a nice swatch all to itself, which is groomed daily.

You’ll likely see it first-hand as you arrive by speedboat, or from one of the several rooms in the petite buildings that face the Sulu Sea. If you take a suite, you might even be able to see the ocean from your outdoor Jacuzzi. Designed by Manila-based architects and decorators, the hotel blends into the landscape, rather than dominating it via towering monoliths. Here, the effect is clean and cool, a kind of boutique minimalism, not glaring or glitzy. Nevertheless, luxury-style amenities like butler service abound.

If sun and sand cease to satisfy, the award-winning spa offers tons of treatments, including morning yoga — and if you really, really fall in love, villas affiliated with the spa are available for purchase. A 14-meter waterfall cascades from the infinity pool to the swimming pool. Fellow travelers can be found at the restaurant, which serves both eclectic international and Filipino specialties, and alongside the various bars. Other eating and drinking options, as well as shops and opportunities for conversation, are to be had down the way a bit, at the island’s open-air D’Mall.
