With all the newly minted boutiques opening in Riga, the phrase “Latvian design hotel” no longer elicits confusion and surprise. The old-world-meets-modern-luxe design philosophy has been given a careful revitalization in a city poised to take its place among the great tourist capitals of Eastern Europe. Housed in a freshly renovated 17th-century residence, the Dome Hotel jettisons any dour leftovers from the Soviet era in favor of a celebration of the city’s joyfully weird Art Nouveau heritage.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a five-star urban boutique without a few of-the-moment accents. The 15 rooms and suites incorporate bold modernist armchairs and bright monochrome linens into an atmosphere that still contains hints of upper-crust gentility. In the larger suites, the integration of elements becomes less harmonious but far more interesting, with classical ceilings and ancient frescos presiding over minimalist furniture that seems culled from a variety of postwar living rooms. It’s no surprise that flatscreen TVs and iPod docks are standard throughout; a more telling amenity is the 24-hour concierge service, offering assistance with securing everything from theater tickets to a flight on a private plane.

While providing such compelling avenues of escape (and don’t discount the lure of the Old City just outside the door) Dome Hotel has plenty of leverage to entice guests to stay put. The sensibly named Fish Restaurant Le Dome offers personalized menu selections and a first-class wine list. Guests who prefer to sip cocktails outdoors should take advantage of the roof terrace, with its view of the nearby Dome Cathedral, a landmark that’s also visible from the hotel’s Finnish sauna.
