With so much else to do in Argentina — dancing tango in Buenos Aires, drinking wine in Mendoza, seeing the penguins and glaciers of Patagonia and the Iguazu waterfalls in the far north — the small city of Córdoba isn’t everyone’s top priority. And that’s a big part of the reason it remains so laid-back and charming. There’s a quaint downtown that’s worth a look, but this is the unofficial capital of cowboy country — best to head out to wide open spaces and stay at a traditional estancia.

All over the country, rustic estancias have opened their doors to visitors; guests stay in simple farmhouses and eat around the family dinner table. Dos Lunas was, undoubtedly, a humbler place decades ago, but today it’s in a decidedly higher league. The place is a self-proclaimed “boutique estancia” comprising over 5,000 acres, a restored homestead with elegant guest accommodations, a lovely outdoor pool, even spa services.

Not that you’ll be skimping on the authenticity here: Dos Lunas isn’t a palace. The hundred-year-old house still looks the same from the outside, the porches still lit with old-fashioned lanterns, the English period furniture still here, just reupholstered. Guests eat at a sturdy wooden table that would be at home in any farmhouse and sleep on romantic wrought-iron beds in one of just a handful of rooms and suites. Granted, there are fine cuts of steak and excellent wine on the menu during a typical barbecue here, and the bed linens are to die for.

Dos Lunas is refined, simple and calm, befitting a place where the great outdoors is the main attraction. Guests can choose from several guided horseback rides into the mountains, including one with a picnic lunch and another with an option for riding under the moonlight. No matter how hotel trends change, no matter what the interior design of the guest rooms, the appeal of a fresh-air adventure remains timeless.

How to get there:
