If it’s not an outright contradiction in terms, we’d suggest that the Dream Downtown — new though it is — is best seen as a piece of New York hotel history. It’s just around the corner from the Maritime, and its historic building shares both an architect and a porthole-scored seafaring motif. And though the notion of the Meatpacking District as nightlife mecca would have taken the first generation of boutique hoteliers quite by surprise, the Dream hotels (and their founder, Vikram Chatwal) are a continuation of a tradition that began a generation ago, right here in New York.

First things first. The rooms are modestly sized, this being New York, but not outrageously small — in fact for this town they’re fairly generous, and those big porthole windows tend to magnify the space. The look is clean and modern, with particular attention paid to the bathrooms, as is the current custom, and to such necessities as fine, sturdy beds and high-end electronics. Meanwhile the suites begin to positively spread out, with such luxuries as private hot tubs and full-size living rooms.

Of course in a hotel like Dream Downtown, the public spaces are at least half of the story. The pool, complete with sandy beach, goes from sun deck to nightclub over the course of a day, the ever-popular Marble Lane is the ground-floor chop-house, and PH-D is a postgraduate-level course in rooftop-terrace revelry, with a stringent admission policy to match.
