Echo Valley Ranch & Spa

British Columbia’s a big place. Five hours up the road from Vancouver and the coastal rainforest is a landscape that’s pure Wild West. And while ranches in this part of the province are no unfamiliar sight, there’s none quite like the Echo Valley Ranch & Spa.

On paper it might seem modest, a mere twenty-one rooms and suites. But what rooms and suites they are. The lodge rooms are lavish enough, clad in rich Canadian hardwood, with decks or balconies that survey the valley and the mountains beyond. The detached cabins break out into luxury-suite territory, plush comforts contrasting with their log-cabin construction.

Most extraordinary, though, is the Baan Thai building. Alongside Echo Valley’s Western-style lodges and cabins is a building whose curvaceous Thai architecture is shockingly authentic, with interiors to match — inside is one extremely luxe suite in a decidedly Eastern style, as well as a Thai-style spa (distinct from the Ranch’s main spa).

Two spas for twenty-one units means Echo Valley places an unusual emphasis on bodily wellness. There’s evidence in the cuisine as well: you’ll find hearty ranch fare, sure, but also some very accomplished Thai cooking, and a preponderance of local ingredients, some very local indeed: many vegetables come from the Ranch’s own gardens, greenhouse and root cellar.

More traditional, perhaps, are the excursions. It wouldn’t be western Canada without a shot at a horseback ride or a spot of fly fishing — and it’s still possible to pan for gold in the Fraser river.

Please note: A 3 night minimum is required in July and August; 2 night minimum for all other dates. Echo Valley Ranch is closed annually, January-March.

Flights from Vancouver to Kamloops Airport (50 minutes) or Calgary (60 minutes) are available daily. Transfers to and from Echo Valley Ranch are available from Kamloops. A private air charter to Echo Valley Airport is approximately 50 minute flight from Vancouver.
