Eden Rock
Baie de St-Jean
St. Barthélemy, French West Indies, Guadeloupe
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Secluded
31 Rooms
The original Saint-Barthélemy hotel has seen a thorough restoration, and is much changed since the days when the guest list included the likes of Howard Hughes and Greta Garbo. One thing that hasn’t changed is what may be Eden Rock’s essential feature: its spectacular situation, atop a rocky promontory in the middle of the Baie de Saint-Jean.
The hotel’s main building, perched atop that famous outcropping, is styled after a French farmhouse, with stone walls and sloped red roofs. Interiors steer clear of whitewashed Caribbean kitsch in favor of a softened, lightened Provençal flavor, with French antiques and elegant four-poster beds against pastel-toned walls, or a more contemporary look, with polished hardwood floors and shapely modern furniture, as in the top-floor loft suite. The most luxurious accommodations and the most jaw-dropping views are to be had from the rooms and suites on the rock — along the beach are spread the cottages, the newest additions, with private terraces and quietly sublime views of the bay.
On The Rocks is the dramatically perched dinner venue, serving fresh seafood with a front-row bay view, and the Sand Bar, down on the beach, serves a more casual al fresco lunch. There’s refreshingly little to do here — not for St. Barths the militant athleticism of the big-time Caribbean resorts. Here the high life is a life of leisure, seaside tranquility, fine dining and the occasional water-borne activity; a bit of snorkeling, perhaps some windsurfing if you must.
How to get there:
Transfers are available to and from St Barths by regular flights, ferry, as well as private charters by plane, helicopter or boat. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
