For every spectacular destination in Greece you can name, it seems there’s half a dozen more, equally spectacular, that you’ve never heard of. So blessed by natural beauty are the Greeks that, when you think about it, it’s rather shocking that they ever left the beach for long enough to do anything else — like, say, invent the harp, or maybe lay the intellectual foundations for all of Western civilization.
So if you’ve never considered the Aegean coast of Greek Macedonia, you wouldn’t have likely thought of Ekies All Senses Resort, which would be a shame. Here in the north, far from Athens and the Cyclades, on the peninsula of Sithonia, you’ll find glorious views, lush landscapes, and an escape from the crowding in the ever-popular south.
The countryside here may be less dramatic than that in the south, the coastline less rocky, the sea less blindingly blue, so it’s only natural that Ekies, visually, softens the sharp edges of southern island architecture, and tones down the familiar palette of brilliant white and rich royal blue. Interiors here are recognizably Greek, but warmer, contemporary rather than modernist, lived-in luxe rather than gratuitously opulent.
It’s not hard to imagine living here, which is at least half the charm — if you can imagine life with a beach club, a sedate pool deck, beach-side dining and open-air massage, then you’re a good part of the way there. Rooms vary in size from simple doubles to oversized loft suites, all inventively furnished in an accessible contemporary style. And perhaps best of all, back home, faced with inquiries about Mykonos or Santorini, you can breezily reply that you know a place in Macedonia….
