Children are welcome in the hotel, although there are access limitations in the bars for persons under the age of 18.

First, the bad news: no swimming pool, just a well-appointed fitness center, and only the penthouse suites have much in the way of views—but one could just as reasonably complain that too few hotels hand out hundred-dollar bills at reception, or that your bellhop is never Orlando Bloom. This place is near-perfect, a thirty-one-room boutique that, as they say, does exactly what it says on the tin; offers chic and comfortable lodging in a convenient city location, and attracts the town's best and brightest young things to its bars and restaurants.

Rooms are either strikingly Japanese, with black floorboards and loft-style timbered ceilings, with dashes of vivid color, or soothingly international, all blonde woods and soft tones for a more calming experience. Beds are sumptuous and generous in size, and flat-screen TVs, DVD players and Bose stereo systems are standard. Look for Bulgari amenities in the massive stone bathrooms—never the sign of a corner-cutting hotel.

The Establishment bar, at one hundred and fifty feet, is the city’s longest, and on some nights the queue for admission is longer—which you’ll bypass, as a hotel guest. The Tank nightclub is a rowdier affair, and the Hemmesphere is more relaxed, with club chairs and divans for luxurious lounging. There are three restaurants as well, Est for fine dining, Sushi E for, well, sushi, and the Garden Bar for weekday Thai lunch.

The hotel was everything we needed it to be and more. We thought from reading reviews that the hotel would be hard to find. Whilst it was nestled away from main streets our taxi driver knew where it was - it turns out this is because the hotel houses one of Sydney's most popular bars! The hotel's location is perfect for anyone wanting to stay centrally as it's within walking distance of the harbour and opera house. The room was excellent. Simple, modern and space was well utlised making the room appear much larger than it actually was! We ate lunch in the garden restaurant which was packed. It seemed like it was very popular with the younger business crowd. Food was great, reasonably priced and portions were plentiful. We also took the hemesphere package which entitled us to $100 worth of cocktails in the hemesphere bar. The bar itself was very cool and the cocktails we had were outstanding! Definitely a must stay for anyone spending a couple of days in Sydney!

I Disliked

Nothing really. Dont imagine it would be that great for business travellers though.

You do not need to get far to savour the good things Sydney has to offer

We had a really pleasant stay at the Establishment. Vibrant, hip with its renowned bars and restaurants (wonderful dinner at Est.!), yet more tranquil and relaxed when you walk through the hotel lobby to your room. So it's up to you to decide whether you want to mingle with the lively local crowd or not. Bars and Restaurant at the Establishment have nothing to do with most other hotel bars and restaurants. The quality and the atmosphere are just awesome and you soon forget that you are a tourist. The front staffs were very friendly and helpful and the location was just perfect (especially for a first time visitor to Sydney). We booked a studio room and were upgraded (without knowing it). The room and the bathroom were very spacious and tastefully furnished. Earthy tones, simple lines, good materials, an overall modern and uncluttered design. Brighter colours for the bathrooms and the stones used for the bathroom really added some extra luxury. We appreciated as well the un-invasive housekeeping. No continuous knocking at the door for towels, turn down service and thousand other excuses. We came back for a further night after a couple of days and there we got the real studio room we had previously booked. Which had the same design, but was just much smaller (of course a little disappointing after having had the bigger room). We are the type of persons that for the sake of design and hip places, could easily live without an amazing view over the city and its harbours. If the view is something essential to you, I'm not sure if the Establishment will be able to provide you with one. A come-back!

I Disliked

As there is little or nothing to complain about the design of the room, there is about some functional and practical aspects of it. Designers sometimes take it too far for the sake of design. You might like or not an open concept bathroom, the one at Establishment is and is really nicely designed with foldable doors that could be closed if you wish so (I guess though it might take 5-10 mins. to do so). Toilet and shower where in separate cubicles, to allow for some more privacy. The shower was a mere simple rain shower. Wonderful, but not really practical and flexible if you do not wish to wash your hairs every time you take a shower. There was very little space where to place towels, and the place where they were was far from the shower. No hooks or rails where to hang anything. The toilet cubicle had nothing else but a toilet. So what? Well if you are a lady, having to deal with an open concept bathroom, I'm sure you will miss a couple of items in there (like a small shelf and a dustbin...). This is what I mean by design gone too far. Bet it was a man designing the bathroom?! The bed could have been a little bigger for the standard of the room and the pillows somehow more comfortable. A reading lamp near the bed would have been appreciated as well. I also had some troubles getting in touch with the Hotel prior to our arrival. I was not able to find any email address to contact them. Fortunately the Tablehotels team helped me out with this very efficiently.

Loved the incredibly stylish mix of old architecture with contemporary renovation and fixtures. Felt like a real insider being able to access our room from the back door of the lounge area -- good security. The breakfast was a great amenity as there is not much else available in the area. Good location otherwise, especially access to the waterfront and public transportation/ferries.

I Disliked

Some (not all) of the front desk staff were inexperienced about travel matters, and once forgot our wake-up call.

I Liked

That it was a boutique hotel - good location - more intimate atmosphere - fabulous bathroom - bed was comfortable. Staff we very friendly and eager to please.

I Disliked

The nights I stayed Wed & Thurs were nice and quiet, but Friday night there was a lot of noise coming from the bar area until 3am in the morning - should pack your ear plugs if staying the weekend. You can also hear other guests coming and going and their doors closing. The other comment is the rooms are very dark during the day if your room faces onto the alleyway. A lot of Sydney taxi's are not sure where the hotel is??!!

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
