Obviously there are plenty of reasons to put up with central London’s overheated hotel market. In the name of geographic convenience we’re often moved to pay quite handsomely for a room that’s, at best, a step or two bigger than snug. But if you’re at all all flexible with your location — or, better yet, if business or pleasure brings you to Maida Vale — then the Europa House Apartments present themselves as an altogether more humane solution.

Space, for starters, is no longer a concern. Here the accommodations range from one up to four bedrooms, and the “apartments” bit is no exaggeration either — kitchens are provided, and they’ll send someone out to do the shopping, for a fee. The look is smart and stylish, with furnishings by some of Britain’s best designers, and the rooms are as well-equipped as just about any central London hotel room.

What’s truly special about Europa House, though, is the setting. Not just Little Venice and Maida Vale, though as residential enclaves go, they’re pretty remarkable. We’re talking about the house’s immediate surroundings, set as it is within several acres of well-kept garden. In any town it would be a fine place to stay; in London it’s extraordinary.
