With two hotels, a pair of spas, a world-class golf course, and eleven restaurants, the Evian Royal Resort is pretty much self-sufficient. And while guests have access to facilities on each of the park’s 42 lovely acres, there are decisions to make: chocolate fondue or low-calorie synergetic cuisine? Gilded historic suite or cozy room in a country villa? Originally constructed to host Edward VIII, the Royal Palace offers the former, while the lodge-like Royal Ermitage features the latter.

High on a hill overlooking Lake Geneva, the Royal Ermitage is more contemporary than the Palace, a more subdued sort of elegance. The main building’s design scheme is inspired by the warmth and simplicity of a French country chalet. Subdued tones of burgundy, beige, and cream, old-fashioned fireplaces, and comfortable furnishings fill both the public spaces and guest rooms, creating an easygoing atmosphere where relaxation takes precedence over style. The grandest suite is complete with a private lounge and balcony, while smaller “cottage” rooms, which face out on the park’s sculpted green grounds, offer internet access and satellite television.

Gastronomic diversity is provided by Evian’s eleven eateries, specializing in different types of cuisine; and yes, the famous water brand is well-represented on most dinner tables. The choice is ultimately one of where to lay one’s head at the end of the day. Those who want to bask in the glow of glittering chandeliers would do best at the Palace, but those who value relaxed contemporary luxury with stunning lake views can’t do better than the Royal Ermitage.
